Smartphone Market: You Should Pay For Your Choice

The latest gadget from Apple presented a range of quite unexpected design solutions one of them being placing its iPhone 4 antenna is a special metal case which encircled the device, providing an area of finite forms and especially sleek style. The innovation was no doubt to customers’ liking as provided something different from other ideas offered by other smartphone manufacturers.

The first complains started just during the first week of sales. Enraged customers stated they have enormous drop calls rates. All Apple consumers were welcomed to ask for a refund or another gadget, as the quality issues have always been of primary importance for the company. Those who were really fed up with the problem could address AppleCare unit. It was a very old practice for the company’s gadgets. In fact, this time the gadget return rate (1.7 %.) was even lower than that for iPhone 3GS last summer (1.7 %). But the fuss in media has not stopped. It has become extremely popular topic for discussions at numerous blogs and technical resources all over the Net. And even serious editions keep on dwelling on the topic. No doubt, partially the overall attention to the issue can be attributed to the immense gadget popularity, but there can’t be any smoke without fire. So, customers keep on asking and all that negative advertising irritates the company and its head immensely.

Last Friday Steve Jobs even held the conference trying to calm down potential iPhone 4 customers. Trying to communicate with the audience the CEO mentioned excellent reputation of the company which has always kept to quality policies, the number of PhDs working for the company as well as the amount of money and time which is currently being spent on the problem. Whether he managed to achieve his aims, time and iPhone 4 sales will tell. But what he has really done is enraging other smartphone manufacturers. No doubt, he has excelled at it.

RIM, Nokia, HTC and a range of other companies protested against bold declarations made by Jobs who stated that the call drop issue is a problem shared across the whole smartphone industry and owners of smartphones from other manufacturers face the same call drop rate. To prove the CEO’s  words a number of clips were demonstrated, showing BlackBerry Bold 9700 from Research in Motion, Samsung Omnia II, and the HTC Droid Eris phones dropping phone calls when held improperly.

Reaction of the companies which handsets were mentioned at the conference followed immediately. RIM, HTC and some other manufacturers claimed that their customers do not face similar problems and that Apple now has to pay for the chosen design pattern. RIM even stated that it was quite evident that antenna in a steel case is more prone to salt and sweat of human hands than that being in plastic, like it is in a usual pack.

It seems that the companies really envy Apple’s success both in  iPhone application development and in hardware segment and are not going to lose a chance to kick their archenemy.
